Hi! I'm sharing my take on the Stencil Girl Altered Playing Cards Collaboration organized by Tina Walker today. I was excited to participate in this challenge because I have never altered a deck of cards. I decided to use chipboard playing cards from Creative Embellishments as the base for my artwork. Nicolle's Clubs, Spades, Diamonds, and Hearts Cards designs were perfect for this project! I prefer the matte finish and strength of chipboard over the material of a traditional deck of cards. The cut-out suit and number designs on the cards are unique and something that really caught my eye and added an element of fun.
Here's the full set of cards. I chose beautiful art deco inspired stencil designs for the back of my cards and stencils with large, easily recognizable designs for the front. I decorated each suit separately for variety, and because I couldn't narrow down my stencil choice any further! I may use these cards in some way in a future project, but for now, I'm enjoying them as they are.
For the club cards, I used an art deco sunburst stencil on the back side of each card and an evil seeing eye for the front of each card. I applied gold spray paint over the sunburst stencil on the back of the cards and then used paint markers to color in the rest of the design. For the front of each card, I applied black dye ink over the eye stencil, and then colored in the rest of the design with paint markers.
Once the color was complete, I outlined the designs on both sides of the card with a black marker.
For the spade cards, I used an art deco summit stencil on the back side of each card and an alchemy sun for the front of each card. I applied gold spray paint over the summit stencil on the back of the cards and then used paint markers to color in the rest of the design. For the front of each card, I applied black dye ink over the sun stencil, and then colored in the rest of the design with paint markers.
Once the color was complete, I outlined the designs on both sides of the card with a black marker, which really helps the designs to pop.
For the diamond cards, I used an art deco Chicago stencil on the back side of each card and an alchemy crowned skull for the front of each card. I applied gold spray paint over the Chicago stencil on the back of the cards and then used paint markers to color in the rest of the design. For the front of each card, I applied black dye ink over the skull stencil, and then colored in the rest of the design with paint markers.
Again, once the color was complete, I outlined the designs on both sides of the card with a black marker.
For the heart cards, I used an art deco sunburst stencil on the back side of each card and an alchemy all seeing eye for the front of each card. I applied gold spray paint over the sunburst stencil on the back of the cards and then used paint markers to color in the rest of the design. For the front of each card, I applied black dye ink over the eye stencil, and then colored in the rest of the design with paint markers.
Again, once the color was complete, I outlined the designs on both sides of the card with a black marker.
