Packing Tape Charm Necklace - Brutus Monroe

How to create an Ornamental agate inspired necklace from marbled patterned paper using a packing tape transfer technique and gold embossing powder.

Hi! I'm celebrating the beauty of the Marbled Magic paper collection with a piece of wearable art that I created for Brutus Monroe. This marbled paper with gold accents is just too pretty to be tucked away inside an album. I created this necklace using a packing tape transfer technique to add the marbled designs to acrylic charms, which I then highlighted with Gilded Embossing Powder and attached to leather cording. This is a simple technique that has beautiful results.

This piece looks like cut and polished stone! The ornamental use of agate was common in Ancient Greece, in assorted jewelry and in the seal stones of Greek warriors, while bead necklaces with pierced and polished agate date back to the 3rd millennium BCE in the Indus Valley civilization. I created a photo tutorial if you'd like to try this technique yourself.

Step 1: Apply packing tape to the top side of strips of patterned paper and burnish with a spoon. Take time to ensure the tape is completely sealed to the top of the patterned paper. The spoon should be warm after rubbing the tape.

Step 2: Soak the tape covered paper strips in warm water for a couple of minutes.

Step 3: Rub away the paper from the back of the tape using your finger. Do not use your nail or any tool that may scratch the ink off the tape. The paper rubs away leaving the colorful marbled ink design. The result is an almost transparent strip of tape that you can see through.

Step 4: Add Glossy Accents to acrylic charms and press onto the sticky side of the tape. Let dry.

Step 5: Use scissors to cut away the excess tape from the charms. Use a piercing tool to open the hole at the top of the charm.

Step 6: Apply clear embossing ink around the edge of each charm and dip into gold embossing powder. Carefully apply heat to set the embossing powder.

Step 7: Add gold jump rings to the charms and string onto a leather cord. Enjoy your piece of wearable art!

I used my transfer tape on clear acrylic for this project, but this technique is fun to use on a variety of surfaces, especially in an art journal. Try layering several pieces of tape with different transfer prints to create one-of-a-kind designs.
