Top That!: An Altered Table Tutorial - SNR Magazine

I created this tutorial for the Crate Paper sponsored event at Scrapbook News and Review Magazine last summer and I thought I'd share it today.  I've had a hand-me-down table in my possession for several years and it has served me very well as a side table in several different rooms, most recently as a piece of nursery furniture. It has been painted many times, and now that my youngest daughter has outgrown her nursery furniture, it can benefit greatly from a makeover. With a little paint and patterned paper, I was able to transform my tired table into a pretty addition to my daughter's room.

Supplies:
Table
Paint
Mod Podge
Clear Sealer
Patterned Paper
Foam Brush
Putty Knife (optional)
Scissors
Sand Paper

Step One: If you're starting with a finished table, prepare the table for painting by lightly sanding the table. Clean all surfaces of the table with a damp rag and let it dry.

Step Two: Apply paint. Note: I chose a crackle paint by Martha Stewart which required the use of a putty knife for the application process. Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step Three: Cut your patterned paper to fit your tabletop. Using a foam brush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the surface of the table and apply the paper in sections. Smooth any air bubbles by pressing outward from the center of the table.

Step Four: Once the table has dried, trim any overhanging paper from the tabletop.

Step Five: Seal the tabletop with several coats of clear sealer, lightly sanding between coats.

Supplies: Patterned Paper: Crate Paper; Paint: Martha Stewart; Mod Podge: Plaid; Polycrylic Sealer: Minwax; Other: Table

My table makeover took several days to complete, but it was worth the wait! I'm glad that I challenged myself to use my scrapbook supplies in a way that was new to me because the result was a great piece of furniture that cost me less than $20 update.

Thanks for stopping by today!
