Hi! Thanks for joining me for Day 2 of my recap of 2017. Yesterday I shared my
favorite paper crafts from the past year. Today my focus is on my favorite mixed media projects. I created a lot more home décor pieces this year, many of which are have been displayed around my home, rather than hidden away in my studio. I feel like this collection of projects reflects me the most. Some of these pieces below are my favorites of all time!
Tando Creative released acrylic mixed media boards this year and I totally love them! The ability to design on both the front and the back of these pieces to create layered designs is super cool. I colored a stamped image with alcohol ink for this project and then further embellished with stickers and embossing powder.
I created this wings mixed media plaque for Tando Creative. I had a lot of fun assembling this piece of altered art with supplies I'd been saving for a while. It feels good to use them on a colorful project with a positive message. This plaque is the first in a series of 3. You can view the other plaques HERE and HERE.
I went off-the-page with this project for Scraps of Darkness, focusing my efforts on the May Attic Finds Creativity Add-On, which included a set of Tim Holtz Idea-ology Wood Vignette Trays. I flipped over the larger tray and built this piece on the back. I took this photo of downtown Detroit from a hotel window in 2014 before I headed out to see one of my favorite rock bands play.
I started designing for Paper Wings Productions again in August. Birds are a common theme in my art. I combined stamping and stitching on this embroidery hoop wall hanging. Sometimes it is refreshing to create a simple project using basic techniques. Less is sometimes more!
My brain is about 90% song lyrics. I have hundreds of CDs and have to admit that in this age of digital music, I still buy them. Why? Besides having a superior sound, I love the little booklet that comes along with the music. It usually contains photos of the band/musician (eye candy), excellent artwork (more eye candy), and if I'm lucky, the song lyrics. I've cataloged just over 350 of my favorite lyrics on colorful stenciled cards for this project. This wheel of verses is the closest thing I have to a diary. Spinning through these cards makes me happy, not only because they are alphabetized, but because I know that they will serve as a starting point for a lot more great art.
I've been working on adding patches and studs to my battle jacket. I'm really loving this form of expression with colorful patches and pins from my favorite bands and artists. I wanted to add some handmade flair to the jacket, for a bit more originality, so I created this one-of-a-kind tchotchke pin with Paper Wings Productions stamps.
I created this canvas for Scraps of Darkness Kit Club. Sometimes I just need to create something pretty and pink and super feminine. The feathers and the gold accents on this piece make me happy!
I created this altered art piece for the Fractured Fairy Tale: Cinderella Collaboration with the ColoriQue by Lisa Marie Jimenez Creative Team and the Sandra Evertson Relics and Artifacts Ambassadors. I had a lot of fun working with another design team to retell the story of Cinderella with a modern twist.
I picked up two pictures at a thrift store and gave them a Halloween makeover. I decorated my mantel for Thanksgiving and Christmas last year, but this is the first time I have dressed up this space for Halloween. I love the pop of color and personality the upcycled frames added to my décor.
I had a ton of fun working on this paint-by-number canvas! The days seem to go by faster and faster during the holiday season. I often feel overwhelmed with the errands, and school and social events that are common at this time of year. I needed a project that would help be relax. I really enjoyed the quiet time in my studio while I worked on this piece. The sound of the paintbrush on canvas was very soothing. I also loved watching this design come to life one color at a time.
Thanks for all the comments this past year! I'm looking forward to a very creative 2018!
Love love loveeeeeeeeee these!! You ROCKED these!!!!!!!!!!
